2003 Odonata Survey Summary
There were approximately 1,000 entries to the North Coast
Odonata Survey by 7 participants in 2003. This season the counties covered
by the survey participants were Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, and
Portage.
We also started something new for the 2003 season, the Non Survey Type
Sightings page was added to the North Coast Odonata website. This was done
in an effort to accumulate data statewide from individuals who observed
Odonata outside of a specific survey site. There were 468 entries by 8
participants covering Adams, Ashtabula, Auglaize, Brown, Butler, Carroll,
Cuyahoga, Delaware, Erie, Geauga, Hamilton, Lake, Lucas, Marrow, Medina,
Portage, Ottawa, and Wood Counties.
Although most entries were from the more common species there were a few
that merit mentioning; the abundance of River Cruisers, a late Lancet
Clubtail on August 3, 2003 at the Gilbert Property in Geauga County, the
late dates including October 18, 2003 of Great Spreadwing Damselflies, and
Yellow-legged Meadowhawks observed at the Carlyle Reservation on the late
date of November 11, 2003 to name a few.
Remember that the North Coast Odonata Survey is not limited
only to the Northern Ohio Counties and we encourage participation
statewide. This is an ongoing survey and we welcome input from all
counties and all types of habitat.
I want to thank everyone for his or her participation in
the 2003 North Coast Odonata Survey and hope that you have enjoyed your
observations of Odonata as much as I have.
Have a great New Year!
